Notes and Quotes

On this page you’ll find personal quotes (some of my strongest convictions) along with a few from others I want to remember and an occasional poem or haiku.

August Moon 2013

As in a novel, life has strange plot twists. There are some things you can’t un-know once someone has shared them with you. I had an ex-husband who passed a couple of years ago. Before he left this world, he asked to meet and shared some surprising things with me. I didn’t ask questions at the time, I just let him tell his story. I couldn’t say if it cleared the air or muddied the waters. ~ngk 6-6-17

January 1, 2015: Grieving is like being sucked into a black hole and coming out in a parallel universe; everything seems the same, but it’s all a little off. This is especially true if the loss is not as definable as it is with death:

BLACK HOLE

There was no

announcement,

no funeral.

There will be no condolences,

no cards,

no gentle pat on the shoulder,

for no one knows I am grieving.

I weep alone. ~ngk

I love (and live by) the phrase, “Just do it.” But it’s a bit simplistic to allow for the ups, downs, failures and restarts of a major undertaking. That’s when I say to myself, “Get started and just keep going.” ~ngk

Ill will towards another doesn’t hurt that person, it hurts you

Sometimes I don’t recognize that God has a different plan for my day than I do. I push ahead with whatever I’m doing even though things are going wrong. I think I’m being thorough, keeping my word, or doing a good job by repeating futile efforts. Until I switch gears and everything clicks. Is there help for the intuitively impaired? ~ngk

Someone once said, “The best defense is a good offense.”  That’s not true. Life is not a football game. Offensive tactics rarely defuse a personal conflict. They’re more likely to make things worse. ~ngk

One of the things I learned from Joan Kennedy’s book, “Unlocking the Secrets of Successful Women,” and from my own experiences, is that success comes by putting yourself out there, making mistakes, learning from them, and not giving up.  Joan is right, “genuine success is not about how much money you make or what title you carry. Its about how much you overcame to get to a place where you are doing what you love, and you wouldn’t dream of doing anything else.” ~ngk

Facebook satisfies the urge to journal for a lot of people–but not everyone. Still others try blogging; but that too, is public and the subject matter is limited to the topic of the particular blog. If you love to write, don’t overlook good old fashioned journaling. Keeping a diary with details and dates of life events and thoughts big and small, can some day become a family treasure or even a memoir. Facebook can’t replace that. ~ngk

We are all resistant to change in varying degrees. I know I am. It doesn’t matter whether it is in business, or in my personal life, my initial reaction is to resist change of any kind. I’ve worked on this though and it’s easier these days to recognize when I’m digging my heels in the ground. Once I let go, and accept or embrace a new idea, I put my heart and soul into it. Is there an area in your life where you can clear the clutter and open a pathway? ~ngk

My 86-yr-old mother plants trees. Optimism? Desire to leave behind something nice for the next family? She has not had an easy life. She’s tired. And lately with Dad needing care, she’s sad; and yet she plants trees. ~ngk

Greek Proverb: A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.

The people “sleeping it off” are not the same as those who left the party early to work on an idea, later deciding to “sleep on it” in order to gel the components and start fresh in the morning. ~ngk

Epictetus: Don’t explain your philosophy. Embody it.

______________________________________________________

“Out of sight, out of mind,” may not have originated in connection with sales and marketing, but it fits. If your product or service is uppermost, or most recently on your customer’s mind, you have an advantage. If not, someone else does. ~ngk

Resist the urge to take matters into your own hands. Remember, closet doors don’t have locks, and God with his wisdom is ultimately in control. ~ngk

______________________________________________________

Do you dream of being an expert at something you love and sharing it with the rest of the world? “But, someone else is already doing it,” you say.  Good. That means there is an audience. Remember, you won’t be just one more voice in the crowd; you are unique. Share your message in a new and different way, and get started now. If you don’t, you must ask yourself, “What is REALLY stopping me?” ~ngk

I read this somewhere: Your value does not decrease based on someone else’s inability to see your worth.

The happiest moment in your life should never be based on a relationship with another person (romantic or otherwise). People and circumstances change, causing a once ecstatic moment to become empty or sad. The happiest moment in your life (however brief) should be of such a nature that it can stand alone and last a lifetime. If you watch for it, you will know it and savor it as it unfolds. I don’t mean to imply that there is only one such moment in our lives, never to happen again. That would be a shame, especially if the first moment comes early in life. No, there can be several. ~ngk

Some of us are late bloomers.  Not everyone peaks in their 40s. Some people need an extra decade or two to hit their stride. That doesn’t make them deficient, just different. It’s great to know that regardless of our age, we still have time to make dreams come true. ~ngk

The Danish writer Isak Dinesen once wrote the following: “All the sorrows of life are bearable if only we can convert them into a story.” Wise words, but I (Nadia) must add that if we cannot do this, for whatever reason, then it is sorrowful indeed.

Nadia’s three favorite Ghandi quotes:

3) Our greatness is being able to remake ourselves.

Being strong in the face of adversity doesn’t always mean you must fight back, or even win. There are times when it takes greater strength to be silent. ~ngk

Real friendship is not rigid. It does not stand on contrived apologies and feigned forgiveness. It is fluid like a river, flowing around lingering shadows of unintended offenses, carving out new direction and illuminating doubts with sparkling reflections of human complexities. ~ngk

__________________________________________________

Don’t run around frantically trying to find yourself. If something is missing in your life, slow down, reflect, and find a way to make it come to you. ~ngk

__________________________________________________

I feel like writing, but I’m not sitting idle waiting for inspiration to choose me today. I’m going out to find it, drag it to my studio and make it sing for me. ~ngk

__________________________________________________

I learned early in life the importance of supporting the efforts and applauding the successes of others. In doing this, we fuel our own endeavors. Fostering envy and ill-will serves only to hinder us. ~ngk

C.S. Lewis: You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.

__________________________________________________

For me, it’s not about the mechanics of writing. They are important, and without them a piece won’t stand up to scrutiny, but the “bones” of the written work should be virtually unnoticeable, allowing the content to shine. ~ngk

Shift, change, and ultimately, transformation. Whatever your age, it’s not too late to shake off negative self-talk and re-invent new chapters in your life. ~ngk

__________________________________________________

Think of your best life as a book, with you as the author and ask yourself, “What chapters are yet to be written?” ~ngk

__________________________________________________

Is it good fun, teasing, mocking, or bullying? One light-hearted joke at the expense of another is generally intended to be good fun. Repeat it two or three times and it rises to the level of teasing. Beyond that, the perpetrator is mocking–or worse, bullying. The intent has changed. ~ngk

__________________________________________________

The greatest single thing I’ve learned from the missteps I’ve made in my life is how to learn from them. Sooner or later, in one way or another, we all backslide or make mistakes. How we recover is what sets us apart. ~ngk

__________________________________________________

It is inevitable that on occasion, something we say or do will hurt someone else. What really matters is intent, and that is what I look at when I’ve been on the receiving end. If there was no ill intent, there is no foul. If, on the other hand… ~ngk

For me, writing is first about savoring an experience, living it fully and in the moment. Then if it proves worthy, I will write about it. Good experiences make great stories; bad ones, well, they’re going to be there, and they’re useful too.~ngk

Lifestyle choices are a lot like buying new clothes. We try on different things until something fits, and even then it doesn’t fit forever, goes out of style or we tire of it. It’s up to us to discard a bad fit as soon as it’s recognized. ~ngk

I rarely sit and listen to music. Not because I don’t like it. I do, I love it. The problem with me and music is that I feel it so deeply that I often can’t bear it. ~ngk
